BRUSSELS (chatnewstv.com) — Feb. 16, 2026 — Euro-area finance ministers on Monday reconfirmed Finnish official Tuomas Saarenheimo as president of the Eurogroup Working Group (EWG), extending his mandate for another two-year term from April 2026 to March 2028.
The decision, endorsed by the Eurogroup following Saarenheimo’s re-election by EWG members on Feb. 5, keeps him in charge of preparing meetings of euro-area finance ministers and coordinating policy work across the currency bloc.
“I am very pleased that the Eurogroup unanimously reappointed Tuomas for another two-year term as president of the Eurogroup working group,” said Kyriakos Pierrakakis, who chairs the Eurogroup. “The Eurogroup benefits greatly from his experience, his ability to build consensus, and his commitment. I look forward to continuing our excellent cooperation in advancing the priorities of the Eurogroup.”
Saarenheimo has led the EWG since 2020 and has also been re-elected as president of the Economic and Financial Committee (EFC), which helps prepare the work of the EU’s Economic and Financial Affairs Council (Ecofin).
The EWG brings together senior representatives of euro-area member states, the European Commission and the European Central Bank to shape eurozone policy coordination. The EWG presidency is based at the General Secretariat of the Council of the European Union in Brussels.
A Finnish national, Saarenheimo served until 2020 as permanent under-secretary for international and financial market affairs at Finland’s finance ministry and has represented Helsinki in EWG and EFC deliberations since 2013.
