BRUSSELS (CHATNEWSTV) — European ministers meeting on Monday urged the European Commission to ensure nuclear energy receives the same policy support as renewables under the EU’s new energy strategy.
Gathering on the sidelines of the Energy Council, the Nuclear Alliance—a coalition of 15 nations, including France, Sweden, and Finland—welcomed the Commission’s Action Plan for Affordable Energy but called for a technology-neutral approach.
“It is crucial that nuclear power is given the same conditions as renewables,” Swedish Energy Minister Ebba Busch, who chaired the meeting, said in a statement.
The group emphasized that the EU cannot meet its climate goals without sufficient low-carbon baseload power and warned against an exclusive focus on small modular reactors (SMRs). Instead, they urged the Commission to support large-scale nuclear projects, reactor lifetime extensions, and the entire nuclear fuel cycle.
Ministers also reviewed progress on financing nuclear projects, with discussions on next steps for the alliance’s working group on investment strategies.
Poland, Estonia, and Italy attended the meeting as observers.
