TIRANA, Albania (May 16, 2025) — Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal joined leaders from across the continent Friday at a European Political Community summit in Albania, where talks focused on defense, democracy, and support for Ukraine.
“This is an important cooperation format that aims to increase European unity and cooperation with non-EU countries,” Michal said ahead of the meeting. “Today, we’ll continue important discussions on European security and competitiveness.”
Leaders from 47 European nations were invited to the summit in Tirana, though Russia and Belarus were excluded.
Michal is participating in a roundtable discussion on strengthening European defense and democracy, with an emphasis on achieving a “just and lasting peace” in Ukraine. The session is being co-chaired by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.
Michal is also holding a bilateral meeting with Moldovan President Maia Sandu. “Moldova has taken impressive steps to meet the conditions for EU accession,” he said. “Estonia’s support for their accession journey remains steadfast.”
This marks the sixth meeting of the European Political Community, which first convened in Prague in 2022. Representatives from the European Union, NATO, OSCE, and Council of Europe are also attending.
The next summit will be held in Denmark later this year.
