CAIRO (CHATNEWSTV) — European Council President António Costa on Tuesday reaffirmed the European Union’s commitment to a two-state solution and urged all parties to implement the ceasefire and hostage-release agreement in Gaza, calling for an end to more than a year of suffering.
“The European Union is fully committed to contributing to peace in the Middle East,” Costa said at an emergency summit of the League of Arab States. “Committed to the two-state solution, where Palestine and Israel can live side by side in peace and security. And free from the threat of terrorism.”
Costa praised the mediation efforts led by Egypt and Qatar and called on all sides to honor their commitments. “This is very important. Not only to allow for the release of all hostages and detainees but also to ensure a path to a permanent end to hostilities,” he said.
The EU chief warned against any attempts to alter Gaza’s demographic or territorial status, saying, “The European Union firmly rejects any attempt at demographic or territorial changes. In Gaza. In other parts of the world. Anywhere.”
Costa reiterated the EU’s support for the Palestinian Authority, stating that its governance would be crucial for Gaza’s future. He also highlighted ongoing humanitarian efforts, including increased aid and the deployment of the EU mission to Rafah to facilitate border crossings.
“The European Union stands ready to provide concrete support for the reconstruction of Gaza,” Costa said, pledging collaboration with Arab nations on governance, security, and rebuilding efforts.
Acknowledging the significance of the moment, Costa concluded with a message of hope: “May the Holy Month of Ramadan bring the peace that we are all looking for. For the Middle East and elsewhere in the world.”
