A long-serving Special Assistant to former Aviation Minister, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, Mr. Ndifreke Saviour Mark, tragically passed away in a hotel room in Abuja on Sunday, October 13, 2024. Mark, who had worked with Fani-Kayode for over 34 years, reportedly slumped and died in the presence of a woman whom he lodged in the hotel room with.
Announcing the incident on his official social media handle, Fani-Kayode expressed his profound grief, describing the late Mark as a devoted assistant and loyal friend.
“It is with great sadness that I announce the passing of my devoted Special Assistant, Mr. Ndifreke Saviour Mark, who was with me for no less than 34 years,” Fani-Kayode said.
According to Fani-Kayode, Mark left home early Sunday morning for Mass at the Catholic Church of Assumption, Asokoro, after which he checked into Mildy Lodge and Apartments in Garki, Abuja. He was said to have spent time in the hotel room with an individual, and shortly after, he collapsed and died.
“He took a room at the hotel and spent some time there with an individual after which he apparently slumped and died in that individual’s presence,” Fani-Kayode revealed.
The deceased was rushed to the Asokoro District Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. His body has since been deposited in the hospital’s morgue.
Following the incident, the woman who was with Mark at the time of his death has been detained by the police, and an investigation is currently underway. Fani-Kayode confirmed that he has requested a full criminal investigation and an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
“I have insisted on a full criminal investigation of the matter and an autopsy. The individual he was with is now in police custody, and the hotel receptionist has also been detained by the police,” he stated.
The hotel, where the tragic incident occurred, was sealed for two days by law enforcement, with the room where Mark lodged still under police seal. The manager and owner of the hotel were also invited for questioning.
Fani-Kayode expressed his deep sorrow at the passing of Mark, whom he described as a son. “Mark was like a son to me, and his passing is a huge blow to me and my entire family. We shared many dreams and fought many battles together,” he added.
Mark, aged 52, is survived by his wife, Barrister Patience Ndifreke-Mark, and two young children. Fani-Kayode has assured the family of his unwavering support during this difficult time, stating that he would ensure they do not lack anything.
“I have assured his wife and family of my intention to stand by them at this difficult time and to ensure that they do not lack or want for anything.”
