Agency Report –
There is no evidence that a deadly attack in an underground train station in western Berlin had an Islamist terrorist motive, according to a joint statement on Sunday from the police and the public prosecutor’s office.
The incident, which occurred on Saturday, left both the alleged attacker, a 43-year-old Syrian man, and his victim, a 29-year-old German man, dead.
Both the victim and the alleged attacker were known to the police and the justice system, according to a statement released on Sunday.
No information is yet available regarding the residency status of the Syrian man.
The Syrian allegedly stabbed the German three times with a kitchen knife. The injured man reportedly managed to leave the train at Sophie-Charlotte-Platz station in western Berlin on his own but collapsed on the platform. He died at the scene.
Shortly afterwards, the suspected attacker was shot at least three times by police after an altercation on the street. He was resuscitated at the scene and taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries, where he underwent emergency surgery.
He was pronounced dead at 6:30 am (0430 GMT), a spokesman for the public prosecutor’s office said.
