ABUJA (AP) — The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared Monday, September 16, 2024, a public holiday to mark Eid-ul-Mawlid, the celebration of the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him). The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, through a press release issued by the Ministry of Interior on September 13, 2024.

In the statement, Dr. Tunji-Ojo congratulated the Muslim Ummah both in Nigeria and abroad on the occasion, urging them to “imbibe the spirit of patience, sacrifice, and resilience.” The minister also extended this call to all Nigerians, encouraging unity and perseverance during this period of reflection.

“While congratulating the Muslim Ummah on the occasion, the Minister implored them to use the opportunity of the period to pray for enduring peace and a more prosperous egalitarian nation,” the statement added.

Dr. Magdalene Ajani, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, signed the statement, highlighting the Federal Government’s commitment to fostering national harmony and religious tolerance during the festive period.

This holiday will give Muslims across the nation the opportunity to celebrate and reflect on the life and teachings of the Prophet Muhammad while joining the broader goal of building peace and unity in Nigeria.
