HELSINKI, Finland (Chatnewstv.com) — A new agreement allowing cross-border taxi services between Finland and Norway will enter into force on Dec. 14, 2025, clarifying rules for operators and making travel easier in the Lapland region, the Ministry of Transport and Communications announced Monday.
The pact addresses a long-standing issue by permitting taxi transport between the two countries, enhancing oversight, and bolstering cooperation between the nations’ transport sectors.
Finnish Minister of Transport and Communications Lulu Ranne said the agreement delivers on a promise to make cross-border trips seamless for Finnish taxis.
“This is good news for taxi operators and their customers in Lapland,” Ranne said in a statement. “We kept our promise that starting in December Finnish taxis will be able to cross the border to Norway with ease. The agreement, which will enter into force on 14 December, will solve a problem that has been long recognised in Lapland.”
Norwegian Minister of Transport Jon-Ivar Nygård echoed the sentiment, expressing relief that passengers will no longer be required to switch taxis at the border.
“This is great news for citizens and industry on both sides of the border,” Nygård said. “I am happy that we have finally solved this problem and that passengers no longer have to switch taxis at the border. I hope that this will make life a little easier for both Norwegian and Finnish people.”
Under the terms of the agreement, a taxi company established in either Finland or Norway can transport passengers from its home state to the other country. It may also pick up passengers in the other state and return them to its home state, provided the return journey was booked in advance. Transit through the other country to a third state is also permitted, as long as no new passengers are picked up during the journey.
Ranne and Nygård signed the agreement in Oslo, Norway, on March 13, 2025. Finland recently completed the necessary national legislative measures required for the agreement to take effect, with provisions on the entry into force being issued by government decree.
