Former Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello Reports to EFCC Over Alleged Fund Misappropriation

ABUJA, Nigeria (CHATNEWSTV) — Yahaya Bello, the immediate past governor of Kogi State, appeared at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Tuesday morning to address allegations of misappropriating state funds.

Bello, accompanied by his legal team, arrived at the EFCC’s office in a black Toyota Hilux, opting to drive himself. This visit comes shortly after a recent Supreme Court ruling that upheld the authority of the EFCC, dismissing a legal challenge from several states questioning the agency’s constitutionality.

The EFCC has been pursuing an investigation into Bello’s financial dealings during his time in office. The agency’s last hearing on the matter, held on November 14, saw the EFCC request an adjournment until November 27, citing that the 30-day window for compliance with the earlier summons was still active.

An EFCC spokesperson emphasized the importance of the ongoing investigation. “We are committed to ensuring that this case proceeds within the boundaries of the law. The summons window remains open, and we are fully prepared to follow through,” the spokesperson said.

Bello’s legal team has maintained his innocence, arguing that the accusations are politically motivated. A member of his legal team commented, “Governor Bello has always been transparent about his financial management of Kogi State. His decision to personally honor the invitation underscores his willingness to cooperate with the investigation.”

The Supreme Court’s recent ruling has solidified the EFCC’s mandate to investigate allegations of corruption, reinforcing the agency’s legal standing. This ruling was seen as a significant boost for anti-corruption efforts in Nigeria, affirming the EFCC’s power to probe state-level officials.

Bello’s next scheduled appearance before the EFCC is set for November 27, when the case is expected to proceed in earnest.
