The ancient city of Kano woke up Thursday morning to a surprising political twist as campaign posters of former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan surfaced across major roundabouts. The posters, boldly displaying the message, “Goodluck Ebele Jonathan for President, 2027. He is our Messiah,” left residents curious about the motivations and identities of those behind the display.
This unexpected development comes barely a year into President Bola Tinubu’s administration, fueling speculations about the intent behind the posters. Jonathan, who served as Nigeria’s president from 2010 to 2015, has often been praised for his leadership, particularly in regions like Kano, where nostalgia for his administration remains prevalent.
“I was surprised to see these posters everywhere,” said Sani Abdullahi, a Kano resident. “Jonathan’s time was good, but I don’t think he wants to come back. Who is behind this?”
Neither Jonathan nor his wife, Dame Patience Jonathan, has expressed interest in another presidential bid, with both repeatedly dismissing rumors of any political ambitions.
Political analyst Dr. Yusuf Ali remarked, “This move could be the work of political actors testing the waters or an attempt to influence the narrative around 2027.”
Whether the posters signal a genuine resurgence of Jonathan’s political aspirations or represent a speculative effort by unidentified groups remains to be seen.
