ABUJA — Doyin Okupe, a former presidential aide and veteran Nigerian politician, has died at the age of 72 after a prolonged battle with cancer, sources close to the family confirmed.
Okupe, who was also a physician, had been critically ill in recent weeks, with his health deteriorating significantly, raising concerns among his loved ones and supporters.
According to media reports, he had been battling prostate cancer for 16 years and later developed sarcoma in his right shoulder. In October 2023, he was hospitalized and flown to Israel for treatment, but his condition failed to improve as he and his family had hoped.
A prominent figure in Nigeria’s political landscape, Okupe served as a media adviser to former presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan. His passing marks the end of a decades-long career in politics and public service.
