LONDON (Chatnewstv.com) — France, Germany and the United Kingdom said they welcomed the reinstatement of United Nations sanctions on Iran, calling the move necessary to confront Tehran’s continued violations of its nuclear commitments.
The sanctions, which came back into force at 8 p.m. EDT on September 27, restore six Security Council resolutions — first adopted between 2006 and 2010 — that restrict Iran’s nuclear, ballistic missile and conventional arms programs.
The measures also reapply global travel bans and asset freezes on designated individuals and entities.
“We welcome the re-instatement … of Resolutions 1696, 1737, 1747, 1803, 1835, and 1929 after completion of the snapback process as provided for in UN Security Council Resolution 2231,” the foreign ministers of the three countries said in a joint statement Sunday.
“We urge Iran and all states to abide fully by these resolutions.”
The governments said Iran has repeatedly breached the 2015 nuclear deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, by exceeding limits on uranium enrichment and stockpiling highly enriched uranium with no civilian justification.
According to the International Atomic Energy Agency, Iran’s uranium holdings are 48 times higher than allowed under the deal.
“Given that Iran repeatedly breached these commitments, the E3 had no choice but to trigger the snapback procedure,” the statement said.
The ministers stressed that diplomacy remains possible but urged Iran to return to compliance.
“The reimposition of UN sanctions is not the end of diplomacy. We urge Iran to refrain from any escalatory action and to return to compliance with its legally binding safeguards obligations,” they said.
France, Germany and the UK said they will continue to work with international partners toward a new diplomatic solution “to ensure Iran never gets a nuclear weapon.”
