A new wave of protests broke out in Kano on Sunday afternoon as tensions escalate over the battle for the royal throne between Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II and Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, the dethroned Emir of Kano.
Around 4 PM, young demonstrators took to the streets demanding the reinstatement of the dethroned monarch. The protesters lit bonfires on major roads and chanted anti-government slogans. Our correspondents on the scene observed that while policemen were present, they did not attempt to disperse the protesters.
The protests followed a special prayer session and saw participants carrying placards with messages such as “Abba Kabir Yusuf, Obey Court Order”, “Court Brought You”, “You Must Obey The Court”, “Aminu Is Still Our Emir”, and “We Are Against Injustice”.
Earlier in the day, similar protests were reported in Gaya, one of the disbanded emirates, highlighting the widespread discontent and support for the dethroned Emir Aminu Ado Bayero.
The situation remains tense as the battle for the royal stool continues to stir emotions and drive public demonstrations.
