Mr. Stephen Dawulung, commandant of the Kwara State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), has called on Nigerians to embrace bicycles as a means of transportation.
While speaking on Monday at an event to commemorate the 2024 celebration of World Bicycle Day, Stephen Dawulung said the aim of celebrating the day was to enhance the use of bicycles as a means of transportation. (“We are celebrating World Bicycle Day to promote the use of bicycles for transportation,” said Dawulung.)
He highlighted the numerous benefits of riding a bicycle, including physical fitness and health, as well as building strength and flexibility. (“Riding a bicycle frequently increases mobility and sustains another means of transportation,” Dawulung noted.)
Dawulung emphasized the advantages of cycling for weight management and mental health. (“Cycling helps in weight management by burning calories and can control mental health by reducing stress, anxiety, and depression,” he explained.)
Furthermore, Dawulung pointed out the environmental benefits of cycling. (“There are environmental benefits of riding a bicycle, as it is eco-friendly and reduces carbon emission, as well as being cost-effective,” he stated.)
The call to embrace bicycles comes as part of a broader effort to promote sustainable and healthy transportation options in Nigeria.
