Berlin – Hundreds of German celebrities and film stars have signed an open letter criticizing a motion on migration reform passed in the German parliament on Wednesday with votes from the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD).
The letter – published on Thursday by the German edition of the Vogue magazine – calls the move a “historic breach of a taboo.”
It was initiated by actors Luisa Gaffron and Jonathan Berlin, and included signatures from major actors including Daniel Brühl, the star of cult classic “Good Bye, Lenin!,” and Jella Haase from Netflix hit “Kleo.”
Other signatories include stars such as Karoline Herfurth, Jasna Fritzi Bauer, Maximilian Mundt, Bjarne Mädel and Philip Froissant.
The letter is addressed to lawmakers from the conservative CDU/CSU alliance, the pro-business Free Democrats and the populist Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance.
All three have said they will vote for another migration bill on Friday that the AfD has also promised to back.
“You are threatening to undermine fundamental rights with the help of right-wing extremists and are thus helping the AfD to gain influence and power,” the letter said.
