Agency Report –
German semiconductor manufacturer Infineon has agreed to acquire the automotive ethernet business of US company Marvell Technology for $2.5 billion.
The company, based just outside of Munich, said late on Monday that the move would accelerate “the build-up of its system capabilities for software-defined vehicles.”
“The acquisition is a great strategic fit for Infineon as the global number one provider of semiconductor solutions to the automotive industry,” said chief executive Jochen Hanebeck.
“We will leverage this highly complementary ethernet technology by combining it with our existing, broad product portfolio to provide our customers with even more comprehensive, leading solutions for software-defined vehicles,” he added.
Ethernet is a crucial technology for the automotive industry, enabling high-bandwidth communication for cars.
The Marvell business has more than 50 automotive manufacturers as customers, Infineon said.
The technology can also be used in other sectors, such as robotics.
“The transaction will support our profitable growth strategy going forward, including new opportunities in the field of physical AI such as humanoid robots,” said Hanebeck.
