Frankfurt – More and more German students are opting to attend foreign universities, official data revealed on Friday.
The Federal Statistical Office said around 138,800 students from Germany were enrolled abroad in 2022, 1% up from the previous year.
“After a pandemic-related decline in German students abroad in 2020, an upward trend has been visible again since 2021,” the study reported.
The number of German students abroad is even slightly higher than in the pre-coronavirus period.
For every 1,000 Germans enrolling in domestic universities, there were 54 studying abroad, the Wiesbaden-based agency said.
The three most popular destination countries for German students abroad in 2022 were Austria, the Netherlands and Switzerland.
Universities in Austria, Portugal and Denmark saw the largest increase in real terms in 2022, while Malta, Finland and Malaysia saw the largest rate of increase.
The most popular subjects for German students abroad were economics, administration and law as well as social sciences, journalism and information science.
For German students of medicine, Eastern Europe is particularly popular, with many flocking to Lithuania, Hungary and Poland.
