Germany Applauds Taiwan’s Democratic Triumph and Calls for Regional Stability

Berlin, 14.01.2024 – The German Federal Foreign Office has commended Taiwan for its successful and peaceful elections held on 13 January 2024. In a statement released today, a spokesperson for the Federal Foreign Office emphasized the strong foundation of democracy in Taiwan and praised the voters for their commitment to democratic values.

“The free and peaceful elections in Taiwan once again showed how firmly democracy is rooted in Taiwan, and how much the voters aspire to democratic values. We congratulate all voters and candidates who participated in the elections, as well as those elected,” the spokesperson stated.

Highlighting the robust and positive relations between Germany and Taiwan across various sectors, the statement affirmed Germany’s commitment to expanding these ties while adhering to its One-China policy. “Peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait are of crucial importance to the region and far beyond. Germany is working towards preservation of the Status quo and confidence building. The Status quo may only be changed peacefully and by mutual agreement. We hope that both sides will further advance their efforts to re-open a dialogue,” the spokesperson added.

The German government’s stance underscores the significance of maintaining the current situation in the Taiwan Strait, advocating for peaceful means to address any potential changes and fostering an atmosphere conducive to open dialogue.

As the international community closely monitors developments in the region, Germany’s position emphasizes the importance of diplomacy, dialogue, and stability in maintaining peace in the Taiwan Strait. The Federal Foreign Office’s statement serves as a reaffirmation of Germany’s commitment to contributing to the preservation of regional tranquility and fostering positive relationships with all parties involved.
