BERLIN (CHATNEWSTV) – Germany’s Federal Foreign Office criticized the detention of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, calling it a “severe setback for democracy in Turkey” and urging a transparent investigation into the case.
“Political contests must not be conducted through the courts and prisons,” a spokesperson for the Foreign Office said in a statement. “We expect the allegations to be investigated transparently as quickly as possible and proceedings to follow the principles of the rule of law.”
The spokesperson also called for due process in cases involving demonstrators arrested in connection with İmamoğlu’s detention.
“Adherence to democratic and rule-of-law principles remains a key element for our relations with Turkey—both bilaterally and in the context of EU-Turkey relations,” the statement read.
