Agency Report –
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has criticized the intrusion of Russian fighter jets into Estonian airspace as “unacceptable.”
“Vigilance is the price of freedom,” Wadephul wrote on X on Friday, hours after NATO jets intercepted Russian warplanes over Estonia’s skies. “The unacceptable violation of Estonian airspace by Russia today shows this very clearly.”
Wadephul said he has promised his Estonian counterpart Margus Tsahkna Germany’s full solidarity.
“By intercepting the Russian aircraft immediately, we are showing that NATO is always ready for defence,” he wrote.
Estonia has requested consultations under Article 4 of the NATO Treaty after the incident, which was roundly criticized by EU leaders on Friday.
