Agency Report –
RSV, or respiratory syncytial virus, causes acute respiratory illness and is widespread globally. According to the RKI’s latest weekly report, Germany’s wave lasted 13 weeks and ended in the week of April 7.
The flu wave also ended recently, the RKI had already said, lasting 16 weeks and concluding in the week of March 31. So far this season, 1,822 influenza-related deaths have been reported, the vast majority among people aged 60 and older.
While both waves are officially over, many hundreds of infections are still occurring. In the past week, about 1,430 RSV cases and 930 flu cases were reported.
Acute respiratory infections overall have declined sharply since winter. Between April 21 and 27, an estimated 3,700 out of 100,000 people had an acute respiratory illness, down from 4,600 the previous week. Cold viruses such as rhinoviruses now account for most cases.
