The foreign minister called for renewed respect for the goals and principles of the UNĀ Charter, reminding delegates that all UNĀ members are obliged to uphold them – a pointed reference to Russia.
Eighty years after its founding, the UNĀ faces major challenges, including a budget crunch, a crisis of multilateralism and a lack of respect for international law, Wadephul noted, without directly mentioning USĀ President Donald Trump’s “America First” policy, under which the United States has reduced its funding for the UN.
“Now more than ever, we need our United Nations to be fit for purpose,”Ā he added.
Wadephul stressed that the UNĀ Security Council needs reforming, with additional permanent and non-permanent seats to better reflect the reality of the world. “Additional permanent seats must go to regions underrepresented today: Africa, Asia and Latin America,” he said.
He also reaffirmed Germany’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the UNĀ Security Council for the 2027-28 session, pledging that Germany would champion justice, peace and respect.
