KATSINA, Nigeria (CHATNEWSTV) — Muryar Talaka (Voice of the Masses), a prominent civil society group, has urged Nigerians to safeguard their democracy, emphasizing that it remains the best form of government that allows citizens the freedom to choose their leaders and have representation at various levels of governance.
In a statement issued Monday, the group’s National President Zaidu Bala-Kofa and National Secretary Bishir Dauda commended President Bola Tinubu for spearheading the removal of sanctions imposed by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso. They also lauded the efforts of Nigerian Foreign Minister Amb. Yusuf Maitama Tugga for his diplomatic initiative in resolving the crisis.
“We also laud the efforts of the Nigerian Foreign Affairs Ministry, which continues to diplomatically engage the governments of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso towards restoring civil rule,” the statement read.
The group further called on the Nigerian government to continue strengthening democratic institutions, ensuring that public consultation, free, and fair elections are firmly entrenched.
“Democracy operates on the constitution and the rule of law, which ensure that every citizen is equal before the law,” the statement continued. “Through democracy, Nigerians have enjoyed basic rights and privileges, including the right to life, freedom of expression, access to justice, and the right to vote and be voted for.”
The group reminded Nigerians of the importance of democracy in giving citizens the opportunity to voice their concerns and shape laws for the betterment of the nation. They also highlighted the dividends of democracy since 1999, which include improved healthcare, education, infrastructure, and human empowerment.
Muryar Talaka concluded by expressing gratitude to both the Nigerian government and ECOWAS for their ongoing diplomatic efforts towards Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso, reaffirming their commitment to peaceful resolution and stability in the region.
