Gunmen attacked the headquarters of Isiala-Mbano Local Government Area in Imo State on Tuesday night, killing two members of the vigilante group guarding the premises.
According to reports, the assailants also set several cars parked at the council headquarters on fire. The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m., with eyewitnesses describing how the gunmen stormed the secretariat, firing shots indiscriminately. Two vigilante members on duty were killed, and part of the council building was also set ablaze.
One eyewitness recounted, “Two security men at Isiala-Mbano council headquarters have been shot dead. The attackers also set fire to a significant portion of the council building and several vehicles parked on the premises. Many others escaped with varying degrees of injuries.”
The attack has instilled fear in Umuelemai, the local government headquarters, with residents fleeing to neighboring villages for safety.
When contacted, the spokesperson for the state police command, Henry Okoye, confirmed the incident. “The command has deployed tactical teams to apprehend those responsible for this crime,” he stated.
