TBILISI, Georgia (CHATNEWSTV) — Russian propagandist Alexander Malkevich, sanctioned by the European Union, United States, and other nations, has been accused of using his recent visit to Georgia to advance Russian intelligence objectives, according to the Institute for Development of Freedom of Information (IDFI).
Malkevich, wanted by the U.S., was spotted during the 2024 Georgian parliamentary elections, a move IDFI says reflects an alarming effort by Russian intelligence to extend its influence in the region. The visit violated Georgia’s law on occupied territories, as Malkevich had previously traveled to separatist-held areas, where he was awarded a Medal of Friendship by South Ossetia’s de facto leader.
“Malkevich’s free movement and official accreditation within Georgia raise serious questions about the involvement—or complicity—of Georgia’s highest political and security officials,” IDFI stated in a report released Friday.
During his visit, Malkevich met with members of “Solidarity for Peace,” a Georgian political party with reported ties to Russian intelligence and financial backers. The party, which champions closer ties with Russia, recently lobbied for the abolition of visa requirements and the restoration of direct flights between the two countries.
The meeting underscores the Kremlin’s intent to influence Georgia’s political landscape, according to IDFI.
“This is part of an operation by Russian special services to influence Georgia, transitioning from covert activities to overt engagement,” the report said.
Despite widespread concerns, Georgian authorities have remained tight-lipped.
The Central Election Commission defended Malkevich’s accreditation, claiming it was granted in accordance with election law. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Internal Affairs declined to comment on how the sanctioned individual entered the country undetected.
The silence from Georgian state bodies suggests an attempt to downplay the incident, IDFI alleges.
“This raises additional questions regarding the possible goals of Malkevich’s visit,” the report added.
IDFI warned that Malkevich’s activities in Georgia demonstrate Russia’s growing confidence in asserting its influence over the country.
“The perpetrator of crimes against the national security of the U.S. and Georgia operates freely in Georgian-controlled territory,” IDFI said.
