Immigration Officer Suspended for Soliciting Bribe at Airport

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has suspended an Assistant Superintendent of Immigration II (ASI II) following allegations of soliciting a bribe from a traveler. The Comptroller General of NIS, Kemi Nandap, announced the suspension in a statement released by the Service’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Kenneth Udo, on Thursday in Abuja.

Nandap condemned the officer’s behavior, which was captured in a video circulating on social media, stating that it contradicts the core values and professional ethics upheld by the NIS. She expressed strong disapproval of the alleged misconduct, emphasizing that it undermines the ongoing reforms designed to enhance service standards within the agency.

“The officer has been placed on indefinite suspension pending the outcome of disciplinary procedures, as mandated by the law and Public Service Rules,” Nandap stated.

The video in question, titled “This is how immigration officers treat tourists in Nigeria,” depicts the officer soliciting a bribe from a traveler. Nandap asserted that this disgraceful act does not reflect the NIS’s commitment to hospitality, reception, and courtesy.

Reaffirming the agency’s zero-tolerance policy towards corruption, the Comptroller General pledged to continue identifying and removing corrupt elements from within its ranks. She also highlighted the NIS’s ongoing efforts to improve service delivery in line with the Federal Government’s ‘Renewed Hope Agenda.’

In a bid to prevent such incidents in the future, Nandap revealed that electronic gates (e-gates) are being installed at all international airports to facilitate smoother travel for passengers.

She urged the public to report any instances of misconduct or corruption by NIS officers to the appropriate authorities.
