WASHINGTON (chatnewstv.com) — Two Iranian military provocations against U.S. assets in the Middle East heightened regional tensions ahead of planned negotiations between Washington and Tehran later this week, U.S. officials said Thursday.
A U.S. Navy fighter jet shot down an Iranian drone after it “aggressively approached” a U.S. aircraft carrier operating in the Arabian Sea, according to a spokesperson for U.S. Central Command. The incident occurred over international waters, the spokesperson said.
Hours later, the U.S. Navy escorted a U.S.-flagged oil tanker to safety after it was approached by two Iranian gunboats that threatened to board the vessel, U.S. officials said.
“The Iranian actions increase the risks of collision, miscalculation and regional destabilization,” the CENTCOM spokesperson said in a statement.
Iranian authorities did not immediately comment on the incidents. The country’s semi-official Tasnim news agency reported that contact had been lost with an Iranian drone operating over international waters, though it did not specify the cause.
The Wall Street Journal reported that the incidents could signal resistance among Iranian hardliners to renewed diplomatic engagement with the United States.
The confrontations come as regional and international stakeholders intensify consultations ahead of negotiations expected Friday. Officials from the United States and Israel, as well as Turkey and Saudi Arabia, held separate high-level meetings Wednesday in Jerusalem and Riyadh to discuss the stakes surrounding the planned U.S.-Iran talks.
Iran has pressed to relocate the talks from Istanbul to Oman, Axios reported. U.S. officials, meanwhile, have laid out broad demands, including that Tehran end uranium enrichment, dispose of its existing stockpiles, curb its ballistic missile program and halt support for proxy groups, according to The New York Times. Iranian officials have reportedly sought to narrow the agenda to nuclear-related issues.
Regional leaders have urged restraint. Turkey and the United Arab Emirates are among those calling on Washington and Tehran to pursue negotiations rather than risk military confrontation. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan emphasized that position during a meeting Wednesday with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, according to Turkish officials.
In Jerusalem, U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who expressed skepticism about Iran’s intentions.
“Iran cannot be trusted to uphold its promises,” Netanyahu said, according to a statement from his office.
A Middle East analyst familiar with the negotiations said the tensions reflect deeper structural issues within Iran’s political system.
“[There is an] organic connection between the repressiveness of the clerical system and Tehran’s aggressive approach to the region,” the analyst said.
“Both are part of what makes the Islamic Republic the Islamic Republic. U.S. diplomacy and goodwill are not going to overcome the ontology of the Iranian regime.”
