Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has announced her candidacy for the upcoming European elections in June.
According to a report by REUTERS, this move is seen as an effort to bolster support for her Brothers of Italy party. However, she has stated that she will not assume a seat if elected.
The European Parliament vote, scheduled for June 6-9, is considered a significant test for her rightist coalition, which has been in power for 18 months.
Speaking at a party conference in the coastal city of Pescara, Meloni expressed her ambitions for Europe. “We want to do in Europe what we did in Italy… create a majority that brings together the centre-right forces and send the left into opposition,” she said to the applause of party supporters.
The conference was also used as a platform to outline EU policies and kickstart the campaign.
