Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has urged Nigeria’s Federal Government to “take urgent and decisive measures” to protect Christian communities following a series of deadly attacks on churches and settlements.
Meloni’s appeal comes after recent incidents of killings, kidnappings and destruction of property targeting Christian populations in several regions of the country.
“These attacks are unacceptable violations of human rights,” Meloni said, calling for the prosecution of those responsible. “Perpetrators of these heinous acts must face justice to prevent further atrocities.”
She urged Nigerian authorities to strengthen security in vulnerable areas and ensure civilians are protected. Meloni cited the need for “timely intelligence sharing, rapid deployment of security forces and coordinated action to neutralize armed groups.”
The prime minister also expressed concern over the humanitarian impact of the violence, including the displacement of families and destruction of homes. She called on authorities to support victims and guarantee access to essential services.
“Accountability is essential for restoring public trust in governance and security institutions,” Meloni said, adding that international collaboration would be crucial in tackling the transnational networks behind some of the attacks.
Her remarks reflect growing international attention to Nigeria’s worsening insecurity, particularly in central and northern regions. Meloni emphasized that religious freedom and protection of minority communities “are fundamental principles that must be upheld.”
Italy has pledged support for capacity-building efforts within Nigeria’s security agencies, offering training and technical assistance.
Meloni warned that “continued inaction” by authorities could deepen instability. Observers say her comments increase diplomatic pressure on Abuja to intensify efforts against insurgents and armed bandits.
Human rights groups have long documented attacks on churches and Christian communities, accusing authorities of failing to provide adequate protection.
Meloni encouraged civil society and religious leaders to work with government agencies to promote peace and ensure justice for victims. “Perpetrators must face the full force of the law,” she said.
Local Christian leaders have welcomed her remarks, saying they highlight the urgent need for stronger security and accountability measures.
Her statement underscores mounting international demands for Nigeria to confront insecurity and human rights abuses more decisively.
