Japanese Foreign Minister Engages with Nationals in Nigeria, Emphasizes Support for Startups and Cross-Border Economic Affairs

TOKYO, Japan, May 1, 2024 – Ms. KAMIKAWA Yoko, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, attended a meeting with Japanese nationals in Nigeria, including representatives from Japanese companies, during her visit to the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The meeting took place on April 30, commencing at 6:30 pm local time (May 1, 2:30 am JST) and lasted for approximately 120 minutes.

Minister Kamikawa expressed her pleasure to visit Nigeria, the largest democracy and economic power in Africa. This visit marks her first to sub-Saharan Africa since assuming the position of Minister for Foreign Affairs. During the meeting, she heard from the participants about the active startup scene and entrepreneurship by women and youth in Nigeria, and the potential for collaboration with Japanese companies. The participants explained the prospects and challenges of conducting business in Nigeria, leading to a lively exchange of ideas.

Minister Kamikawa emphasized her focus on creating regional hubs and developing Japan’s efforts not only at the “dot” level but also the “surface” level. In order to effectively support Japanese companies operating in a wide area, she announced the placement of officials in charge of cross-border economic affairs. She invited the participants to actively engage with these officials.

Minister Kamikawa stated her will to actively and proactively support Japanese companies engaging in overseas economic activities more than ever before. This meeting underscores Japan’s commitment to strengthening its economic ties with Nigeria and supporting its nationals in their entrepreneurial endeavors.
