TRIPOLI, Libya, May 01, 2024 – The first meeting of the Joint Committee between the Libyan authorities and the European Union Integrated Border Assistance Mission in Libya (EUBAM) took place on April 30, 2024. This meeting was in line with the memorandum of understanding signed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation with the mission on October 9, 2023.
The Joint Committee’s mandate is to oversee and coordinate cooperation between the two parties. This collaboration underscores the Mission’s commitment to bolstering the capacity of the Libyan authorities responsible for border security and management.
During the meeting, both sides reviewed the activities carried out by the Mission in the previous period. They also discussed the Mission’s plan for the period from May 2024 to June 2025, tailoring it to meet the needs of the Libyan side.
Both parties highlighted the crucial role of the Mission in providing technical and strategic advice to Libyan authorities dealing with border management and security. The Mission also offers necessary technical consultations and facilitations to Libyan authorities related to border management and security, closely coordinating with the European Delegation in Libya.
As a first phase, both parties agreed at the end of the meeting to concentrate their collaboration on enhancing the capacities of the Libyan border management and security authorities. The focus will be on securing the border area of Alassa and the border crossing point of Ras Jdir, as well as providing technical and logistic support to maritime borders.
