The German Federal Foreign Office and the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development issue a joint statement regarding the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).
UNRWA has long played a crucial role in addressing the basic needs of the Palestinian population, providing vital humanitarian assistance in the Gaza region. Recognizing the importance of UNRWA’s mission, Germany aligns with other donor countries in expressing its concern over recent accusations against members of UNRWA’s staff.
Commissioner-General Lazzarini and the organization have taken swift action in response to these allegations, demonstrating a commitment to transparency and accountability. Germany acknowledges and supports these efforts to address the issues at hand promptly.
In light of the current situation, Germany, in coordination with other donor countries, has decided to temporarily withhold approval for any further funding directed to UNRWA in Gaza until the matter is thoroughly resolved. It is essential to note that no new funding decisions were pending at the time of this joint statement. The temporary withholding of funding is a precautionary measure, aiming to ensure the integrity and credibility of UNRWA.
However, it is crucial to emphasize that this temporary funding suspension does not affect ongoing humanitarian assistance efforts. Germany remains committed to supporting the needs of the Palestinian population in the region. Just days ago, Germany increased its funding for the International Committee of the Red Cross and UNICEF by 7 million euros, reflecting a continued dedication to humanitarian causes.
Since October 7, Germany has actively provided humanitarian assistance through UNRWA, facilitating the release of development cooperation funding to address urgent necessities such as water, food, emergency shelter, hygiene and sanitation facilities, as well as medical supplies. This assistance is particularly directed towards families in the Gaza region, including those who have sought refuge in the southern areas.
Germany stands firm in its commitment to promoting stability, peace, and the well-being of the Palestinian population. The joint statement underscores the importance of a thorough investigation into the accusations against UNRWA staff and reiterates Germany’s ongoing dedication to humanitarian aid in the region.
