Joseph Nyumah Boakai of the Unity Party (UP) is currently leading President George Weah of the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) in a tight race in the second round of presidential elections in Liberia, held on Tuesday, November 14, 2023.
According to the official results released on Friday, November 17, Boakai, a Liberian politician who served as the 29th vice president of Liberia from 2006 to 2018 under President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, is leading President Weah with a margin of 28,434 votes or 1.78%.
From 99.58% results declared so far by the Liberian National Electoral Commission (NEC), Boakai (UP) garnered 814,212 votes or 50.89% of all votes cast.
George Weah of the CDC, on the other hand, scored 785,778 votes or 49.11% of all votes cast.
Meanwhile, the electoral commission has ordered re-run in some polling places.
In the meantime, Weah’s CDC has reportedly approached the Liberian High Court and Supreme Court seeking to stop further release of the election results.
However, ECOWAS and other international observation missions have intensified preventive diplomacy to douse heighted political tensions in the country.
