WASHINGTON (CHATNEWSTV) — The U.S. Department of Justice on Friday dismissed a lawsuit against Alabama that had challenged the state’s efforts to remove noncitizens from its voter rolls ahead of the 2024 presidential election.
The lawsuit, filed under the Biden administration, was withdrawn to allow Alabama to implement a legal and efficient process to secure its elections, Acting Assistant Attorney General Mac Warner said.
“States are required to maintain accurate voting rolls and remove ineligible voters,” Warner said. “This Administration supports the efforts of states like Alabama that engage in voting security measures to ensure only citizens are voting in our elections.”
Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen announced in August 2025 that his office had identified over 3,200 noncitizens who had registered to vote in the state. The lawsuit had forced Alabama to halt its removal process in 2024.
With the case now dismissed, Alabama can move forward with developing a system to comply with Section 8 of the National Voter Registration Act, which mandates states to maintain accurate voter rolls.
