IBADAN, Nigeria (Chatnewstv.com) — Former Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Kabiru Turaki (SAN), has been elected National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the party’s national convention held Saturday at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan.
Announcing the results, Senator Ben Obi said Turaki secured 1,516 votes, defeating Senator Yakubu Danmarke, who scored 275. Of the 1,834 total votes cast, 43 were voided.
Solarin Adekunle was elected Deputy National Organising Secretary. The party had expected 3,131 delegates, with 2,745 accredited for the exercise.
In his acceptance speech, Turaki told party members he would “not betray their trust,” insisting the PDP remains “the party for the Nigerian people.” He vowed to return control of the party to its members and end impunity within its structures.
Turaki, 54, from Kebbi State, is a University of Jos graduate with over 25 years of legal experience. He previously contested the 2011 Kebbi governorship race and later served as a minister in the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan.
The convention drew several PDP governors, senior lawmakers and party leaders.
