Kano, 27 May 2027 – Justice Aisha Adamu Aliyu of the Kano State High Court has directed the Commissioner of Police in Kano to take over the palace and evict the 15th Emir, Aminu Ado Bayero. This directive comes as part of an interim order issued amid ongoing legal disputes regarding the legitimacy of several emirs in the state.
The interim order, granted on May 27, 2027, states, “An order of interim injunction is hereby granted restraining the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, & 5th Defendants… from parading themselves as Emirs of Kano, Bichi, Gaya, Rano and Karaye pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice filed by the Applicants.”
Further, the court directed immediate action by the police, stating, “The Commissioner of Police Kano State should immediately take over the palace of the Emir of Kano… and evict the 1st Defendant/Respondent from the said palace pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice dated May 24, 2024.”
Additionally, the order mandates, “An order is hereby made that the 15th Defendants be served through the office of the Commissioner of Police, Kano State who is to ensure immediate implementation of the order of the Hon. Court in the interest of justice.”
The hearing for the motion on notice, dated May 24, 2024, has been adjourned to June 11, 2024.
The respondents in this case include the deposed Emirs of Karaye, Gaya, Bichi, Rano, and Kano, as well as the Inspector General of Police, Director of the DSS, NSCDC, and the Army. The applicants are the Attorney General of Kano State, the Speaker of the House of Assembly, and the Kano State House of Assembly.
The Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Haruna Isah Dederi, informed the BBC that the state government received an earlier order granted by a Federal High Court which stopped the reinstatement of the Emir after action had been completed on Monday.
