Tunde Onakoya, founder of Chess in Slums Africa, has broken the Guinness World Record (GWR) for longest chess marathon.
Onakoya reached 62 hours of continuous play during the marathon in Times Square, New York, alongside fellow chess player Shawn Martinez.
He broke the previous record of 61 hours, 3 minutes, and 34 seconds, which was held by the Norwegian duo, Norwegians Odin Blikra Vea and Askild Bryn.
Although he had already set a new record, Onakoya and Martinez continued playing to achieve the planned 70-hour mark.
The new record is still pending official confirmation by Guinness World Records.

Onakoya aims to raise support for building free schools for homeless children in Nigeria by achieving the feat.
In April 2024, Onakoya completed a 60-hour chess marathon. He played alongside Martinez, surpassing the previous 56-hour record held by two Norwegians, Hallvard Haug Flatebo and Sjur Ferkingstad in 2018.
