ABUJA (Chatnewstv.com) — Nigeria’s Labour Party has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to its former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, demanding that he resign from the party after aligning with a new opposition coalition.
In a statement Wednesday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, accused Obi of abandoning the Labour Party while attempting to recruit its members into what it described as a group of “desperate politicians.”
“Desperate politicians can’t birth a new Nigeria,” Ifoh said. “The coalition is made up of those who mismanaged Nigeria for years. They are only interested in returning to power.”
The Labour Party reiterated its refusal to join the newly formed coalition, which includes several leading opposition figures. It dismissed the group’s promise of a “New Nigeria” as deceptive and warned its members against maintaining dual allegiances.
“Labour Party is not available for people with a dual agenda,” Ifoh said. “You can’t claim Labour Party in the morning and coalition in the evening.”
Obi, who ran as the Labour Party’s flagbearer in the 2023 general elections, is reported to have held meetings with members of the party, encouraging them to join him in the coalition. The Labour Party said many of its officials have refused to defect.
The party emphasized that 70% of Nigeria’s population are young people seeking genuine change—not recycled leadership.
“The new Nigeria that the youths are dreaming of cannot be realized with this coalition,” Ifoh said. “These are opportunistic politicians desperate to remain in power.”
Ifoh urged loyal members to remain committed to the Labour Party ahead of future elections, asserting that the party remains the only viable path to the transformation Nigerians desire.
“Labour Party is willing to lead Nigerians along that trajectory,” he said.
