TRIPOLI, Libya (CHATNEWSTV) — Representatives from Libya’s East and West military and security institutions, including two female officers responsible for border security, counterterrorism, and irregular migration, have agreed to form a specialized study center focused on border security.
The decision was made following a two-day coordination meeting in Tunis on February 26, facilitated by the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL). The Joint Technical Coordination Team (JTCT) for Border Security proposed the creation of the study center, aimed at analyzing border security risks and providing practical, on-the-ground solutions. The center will focus on strengthening Libya’s national security by addressing terrorism and irregular migration.
“This center will significantly contribute to strengthening border security and combating terrorism,” said one of the meeting participants. “It will develop actionable solutions and support efforts to enhance national security.”
As part of the meeting, the JTCT requested UNSMIL to arrange a field visit to a Tunisian land border center near the Libyan-Tunisian border. This visit was designed to enhance experience sharing and raise awareness of regional cross-border security challenges.
“The establishment of this study center is part of the joint coordination mechanism approved at the JTCT meeting in Benghazi last December,” said Ali Kilkal from UNSMIL’s Security Institutions Service. “The next step will be to establish physical centers and equip them for effective coordination, communication, and information exchange.”
The JTCT members plan to reconvene in April in southern Libya to further discuss the regional coordination mechanism.
