TALLINN (CHATNEWSTV) – Lithuanian Prime Minister Gintautas Paluckas on Monday met with Estonian leaders in Tallinn to discuss regional security, defense cooperation, and joint infrastructure projects, as both Baltic nations prepare for significant increases in defense spending.
“For our countries, increasing defense spending is not just words, it’s a real budgetary commitment,” Paluckas said after meeting with Estonian President Alar Karis.
Lithuania will raise its defense budget to 5.25% of GDP starting in 2026, reallocating funds from non-priority expenses to strengthen national security. The additional investment will accelerate the 1st Army Division’s full operational capability by 2030—ten years ahead of schedule—enhancing NATO integration and extending Lithuania’s combat range to 300 kilometers.
Estonia has also committed to increasing its defense budget to at least 5% of GDP next year. During talks with Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal, Paluckas reaffirmed the importance of transatlantic ties and closer Baltic cooperation on security, critical infrastructure, and energy projects.
At a meeting with Riigikogu President Lauri Hussar, Paluckas highlighted the need for strengthening sanctions on Russia and increasing support for Ukraine’s fight for sustainable peace.
“Lithuania and Estonia have always stood together, and in these turbulent times, our unity and shared commitment to security will define the future of our region,” he said.
