Manchester United have revealed plans to build a new stadium and move away from the club’s current Old Trafford home.
The club revealed plan for the new stadium on their website on Tuesday.
The stadium is expected to cost £2 billion and would be a 100,000-seater close to the current Old Trafford stadium.
The club noted that the new stadium, and its wider regeneration project, can deliver about £7.3 billion per year to the UK economy through potential creation of 92,000 new jobs, over 17,000 new homes, and about 1.8 million visitors annually.
According to Sir Jim Ratcliffe, co-owner of Manchester United; the new stadium would be the world’s greatest stadium.
He said Old Trafford has fallen behind the best stadiums in world football, and the new stadium that has received full government backing would catalyse economic growth in the area.
He said, “Today marks the start of an incredibly exciting journey to the delivery of what will be the world’s greatest football stadium, at the centre of a regenerated Old Trafford.”
“By building next to the existing site, we will be able to preserve the essence of Old Trafford, while creating a truly state-of-the-art stadium that transforms the fan experience, only footsteps from our historic home.”
“The Government has identified infrastructure investment as a strategic priority, particularly in the north of England, and we are proud to be supporting that mission with this project of national, as well as local, significance.”
