Mark Carney’s Liberal Party has emerged victorious in the Canadian election, defying expectations and capitalising on a surge in nationalism sparked by Donald Trump’s annexation threats and trade war.
In his victory speech, Carney said, “President Trump is trying to break us so that America can own us – that will never, ever happen. We will fight back with everything we have to get the best deal for Canada.”
The election took a dramatic turn after Trump’s comments suggesting Canada should become the 51st US state, infuriating Canadians and boosting support for Carney’s party.
Carney added, “America wants our land, our water, our resources. We must recognise the reality that our world has fundamentally changed.”
UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has congratulated Carney, saying, “The UK and Canada are the closest of allies, partners and friends. With your leadership, and personal ties to the UK, I know the relationship between our two countries will continue to grow.”
