KANO, Nigeria (CHATNEWSTV) — The Chairman and Chief Executive of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd.), has charged officers of the agency to remain committed in the ongoing battle against drug trafficking and abuse, describing the fight as “not for the faint-hearted.”
Marwa made the call on Saturday in Kano while commissioning newly constructed blocks of residential flats for NDLEA personnel in the Zonal Command, Kano Command, Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport Command, and the Strike Force Team. He also inaugurated a new rehabilitation facility for drug users.
“The war against drug abuse and trafficking demands unyielding courage, iron discipline, and a resolute sense of purpose,” Marwa said. “With improved living conditions, our officers are fortified—physically, mentally, and emotionally—to bear the burden of this vital mission.”
He praised President Bola Tinubu for prioritizing the welfare of security personnel and reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to improving their working and living conditions.
“We are acutely aware that the effectiveness of our officers hinges not merely upon their training and tools, but also upon the quality of their living conditions,” he said. “A secure and decent home front empowers the spirit, sharpens the mind, and steels the resolve of those tasked with the solemn duty of safeguarding our society.”
Marwa noted that the new housing units were part of a broader push to improve infrastructure across NDLEA commands. He cited the commissioning of the agency’s first-ever barracks in Yola, Adamawa State, in February, as well as ongoing projects in Abuja, Enugu, and Lagos.
“These structures are not mere edifices of brick and mortar; they are symbols of peace, assurance, and respect,” he said. “They reflect the value we place on our officers and our enduring pledge to uplift their standard of living.”
He commended NDLEA officers serving in Kano for their dedication and results in recent months, especially given the state’s strategic location along international trafficking routes.
“The records of arrests, seizures, and convictions over the past twelve months have been impressive,” Marwa said. “Kano’s proximity to an international border and its airport makes it critical in our national drug control strategy. NDLEA officers in this territory must continue to rise to the challenge.”
Marwa also used the occasion to decorate the Zonal Commander, Zone 5, Maryam Gambo Sani, with her new rank of Deputy Commander General of Narcotics (DCGN).
He urged officers to treat the facilities with care and professionalism, stating that the event marked “a notable milestone in the determined march toward a more resilient, people-focused, and mission-driven NDLEA.”
Marwa concluded by thanking President Tinubu for his “steadfast support” and appreciated stakeholders working with the agency to fulfill its constitutional mandate.
