MUNICH (CHATNEWSTV) — European Union High Representative/Vice-President Kaja Kallas said Friday that Russia’s latest bombing of a nuclear station proves Moscow has no interest in peace, calling ongoing diplomatic efforts “obsolete.”
“This Security Conference could not be any more timely,” Kallas told reporters upon arrival at the Munich Security Conference.
“Russia is bombing a nuclear station. It clearly shows that they do not want peace.”
The EU Foreign Policy Chief emphasized that the war in Ukraine remains unresolved and that Western nations must focus on immediate support for Kyiv.
When asked about Europe’s role in future peace negotiations, Kallas dismissed the idea of a settlement that excludes Kyiv and its allies.
“You can do the deals without us, but they will not work,” she said.
“They just will not work.”
On the prospect of U.S. President Donald Trump pushing for a peace deal with Moscow, Kallas insisted that sanctions on Russia must remain in place.
“We cannot possibly imagine just lifting the sanctions and walking away,” she said.
“Russia must pay for the damage it has caused. It cannot come from our taxpayers or companies.”
She also urged China to stop supplying dual-use goods that support Russia’s war effort.
“If China wants good relations with Europe, they must stop enabling Russia,” Kallas said.
“Eighty percent of these goods come via China, and we need this war to stop.”
Responding to concerns about a possible repeat of 1938-style appeasement, Kallas drew parallels to pre-World War II Europe.
“In 1938, the Czechs were ready to fight; they only asked for support. Today, Ukraine is fighting, and we must support them,” she said. “That is why we need to stick to our ground.”
Kallas expressed hope that Europe and the U.S. would maintain a united front, despite differing statements from American officials.
“Iran, Russia, North Korea—more covertly, China—are teaming up against us,” she warned.
“We need to stick together”, Kallas said.
