Namibia Mourns the Passing of Anti-Apartheid President Hage Geingob, Nation’s Longest-Serving Leader

WINDHOEK, Namibia, February 4, 2024/ – Namibia is in mourning following the announcement of the passing of President Hage Geingob, who succumbed to illness at the age of 82. The presidential office confirmed that President Geingob breathed his last early Sunday morning at a hospital in the capital, Windhoek.

First elected as president in 2014, Geingob held the distinction of being Namibia’s longest-serving prime minister and its third president. As Namibia prepares for presidential and national assembly elections later this year, the nation reflects on the leadership and legacy of a political stalwart.

President Geingob, currently in his second term, had disclosed in January that he was undergoing treatment for cancer. The revelation came after a routine medical check-up, which led to a biopsy uncovering “cancerous cells.”

Acting President Nangolo Mbumba expressed profound sadness in delivering the news, stating, “It is with utmost sadness and regret that I inform you that our beloved Dr. Hage G Geingob, the president of the Republic of Namibia, has passed on today.”

Geingob’s impact on Namibian politics and society was significant, with his leadership spanning crucial periods in the nation’s history. As tributes pour in, the country reflects on the achievements and challenges faced under his tenure.

The upcoming elections, set to take place later this year, add a layer of complexity to Namibia’s political landscape. The passing of President Geingob marks the end of an era and the beginning of a new chapter for the nation. Namibia mourns the loss of a dedicated leader, and condolences pour in from both within the country and the international community.
