WASHINGTON (CHATNEWSTV) — Nigeria has endorsed the Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI), a U.S.-led global effort aimed at preventing the spread of weapons of mass destruction (WMD), the U.S. State Department announced Monday.
“The United States welcomes Nigeria’s endorsement and participation in the Initiative and looks forward to working with the Government of Nigeria to advance the counterproliferation goals of the PSI,” the State Department said in a statement.
With Nigeria’s endorsement, PSI now includes 116 countries committed to blocking the transfer of WMDs, their delivery systems, and related materials to both state and non-state actors. The initiative, launched in 2003 in Krakow, Poland, enhances international cooperation by streamlining information-sharing and strengthening legal frameworks to interdict illicit shipments.
The U.S. emphasized the importance of PSI’s expansion, calling it “critical to America’s safety” and a key component of global security. “PSI’s core objective—to prevent the transfer of WMD—reduces the likelihood these weapons will be used, ensuring continued American prosperity,” the statement added.
The initiative, which marked its 20th anniversary in 2023, remains a cornerstone of U.S. efforts to curb the proliferation of WMDs and enhance global counterproliferation measures.
