ABUJA, Nigeria (chatnewstv.com) — Nigerian health authorities are on heightened alert after Ghana confirmed 13 new cases of mpox, bringing the country’s total number of infections to 993 as of Jan. 25, 2026, Ghana’s health service said.
The Ghana Health Service announced the latest figures in a post on its official X account on Tuesday.
“Mpox update as of January 25, 2026. Thirteen new cases were recorded, bringing the total confirmed cases to 993,” the agency said.
While no official statement was immediately issued by Nigerian authorities, public health experts said the rising case numbers in Ghana have raised concerns across the region because of frequent cross-border travel and trade between the two West African neighbors.
The Ghana Health Service reminded the public that mpox is primarily spread through close physical contact with an infected person. The virus can also be transmitted through contact with contaminated materials, infected animals, and from an infected mother to her baby during or after pregnancy.
“Protect yourself and others by maintaining good hygiene and reporting any symptoms such as fever, rash, headache, muscle aches, swollen lymph nodes, chills and tiredness,” the health service said.
Mpox, a viral disease related to smallpox, has caused periodic outbreaks in parts of Africa in recent years. Health officials have repeatedly stressed the importance of early detection, public awareness and cross-border surveillance to limit its spread.
Regional health authorities are expected to continue monitoring the situation closely as Ghana steps up response measures and neighboring countries review preparedness plans.
