Nigerian Dr. Chukwudi Okeke Elected First Black Chairman of Oxfordshire Cherwell District Council

Oxfordshire, 26 May 2024 – Dr. Chukwudi Okeke, a Nigerian native of Anambra State, has been elected as the first Black Ethnic Minority Councilor to serve as Chairman of Oxfordshire Cherwell District Council. Dr. Okeke’s election took place during the Annual Full Council meeting on May 22, 2024.

Cherwell District Council, a local government district in Oxfordshire, England, recognizes the Chairman of the Council as the ‘First Citizen of the District’ and the ‘Ceremonial Head of the Council and the Cherwell District.’ Dr. Okeke’s election marks a significant achievement, not only for him personally but also for the broader Black Ethnic Minority community.

Reflecting on his groundbreaking election, Dr. Okeke expressed deep gratitude to his colleagues for their confidence in him. “Today is a remarkable day for the Cherwell District. I made history two years ago by becoming the first Councillor from a Black Ethnic Minority elected to this Council. History has been repeated today as I become the first member of the same background to hold the position of Chairman of Cherwell District Council,” said Dr. Okeke.

He further highlighted his motivation for entering politics, driven by a vision of an inclusive society. “I got into politics due to my desire for a healthy society. A society where everyone, irrespective of gender, ethnicity, religion, sexuality, and social background, can thrive. Cherwell is a fantastic area to live, work, and do business, and I am eager to continue promoting it as such,” he added.

Dr. Okeke, who resides in Oxfordshire with his family, was born in Amaokpala town, Orumba North local government area of Anambra State. He holds a BEng (Hons) and a PhD in Automotive Engineering from Oxford Brookes University, UK. Professionally, he leads CAE Design in the Automotive Design Industry.
