ABUJA, Nigeria (Chatnewstv.com) — The Nigeria Labour Congress on Wednesday accused the Senate, led by President Godswill Akpabio, of undermining democracy by continuing to bar Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan from resuming her duties despite a court ruling voiding her suspension.
“This act is not merely an error in judgment; it is a brazen, premeditated assault on democracy itself, a direct threat to the social contract, and a dangerous slide towards fascism masquerading as governance,” NLC president Joe Ajaero said in a statement.
Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central, was suspended for six months earlier this year. The NLC said the Senate’s refusal to reinstate her after the suspension expired — and after a court voided the decision — amounted to disenfranchising her constituents.
“By willfully disenfranchising an entire senatorial district, the Senate is effectively stealing the political representation for which the people pay taxes,” Ajaero said. “This denies Kogi Central its right to participate in lawmaking, oversight, and the appropriation of national resources.”
The Senate leadership has argued that the case remains before the courts, a claim the NLC described as a “frivolous legal technicality” and a ploy to silence dissent.
Ajaero warned that the labour movement would mobilize if the Senate continued what he called a “calculated test-run for the emasculation of opposition and the subjugation of sovereign will” ahead of the 2027 elections.
“An attack on one senator today is an attack on the sovereignty of every Nigerian voter tomorrow,” he said.
