Nigerian Lawmaker Alex Ikwechegh Referred to House Ethics Committee Over Assault on Cab Driver

ABUJA, Nigeria (ChatnewsTV) — Nigerian lawmaker Alex Ikwechegh has been referred to the House Ethics Committee for investigation after a viral video showed him allegedly assaulting a cab driver, sparking widespread condemnation.

The decision came after Majority Leader Julius Ihonvbere raised a point of order on Tuesday, calling attention to the incident. In the video circulating on social media, Ikwechegh was seen assaulting Stephen Abuwatseya, a Bolt driver, and threatening to make him “disappear.”

The video has prompted a strong backlash, with numerous groups, including the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, condemning Ikwechegh’s conduct. Critics argue the lawmaker’s actions reflect poorly on the House of Representatives.

Following the referral, Ikwechegh now faces scrutiny from the Ethics Committee, which will conduct a thorough investigation. If found guilty, Ikwechegh could face suspension, signaling a potential shift toward greater accountability for lawmakers.

The House Ethics Committee has yet to set a date for the hearing.
